Dino doodles

Last evening in class I was working with advanced students in a different way. I was encouraging them to use a free form sketch technique when they draw. Free form sketching involves the use of a permanent medium such as black line or ball point pen or marker. You take away the option of erasing and are therefore committed to the image you create. It's a little clumsy and intimidating at first but after a while you get the hang of it. The difference this approach makes in developing an artist's confidence is significant.

I came up with these sketches while participating with my students. I've set them up as layouts for a booklet I'm putting together on this subject. The line in the center of each spread is where the pages will fold. The drawings are presented in the sequence they were created for the most part. This was fun and I enjoyed myself. We all had a good time plus I appreciated the practice.

Aw, they are so cute :D

Do you want to know a funny thing about dinosaurs? The modern birds ARE actual dinosaurs, so we can assume that a lot of bird-like dinosaurs were totally covered in feathers gìjust like birds. From the little Velociraptor to the big Tyrannosaurus.
Here is a conference by Jack Horner, the paleontologist who discovered the link between dinosaurs and birds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QVXdEOiCw8

  2. Nice looking dinosaurs Charles, they remind me a bit from the ones from Land Before Time which was produced by Spielberg and Universal. While your designs are a bit more cartoony whereas LBT was more realistic in design. You know what else, they look a bit like the dinosaurs from We're Back: A Dinosaur Story, another Universal film produced by Spielberg and Ambin.

Also Charles, check this out. In Crash 1 when you complete a level, this shows up and we can see your design (Crash's crazy face) in the background:

Was that the face of the Crash of your cover design you faxed to ND back in Jan. 1996 or was it a new piece of art in general at the time?

  3. Great video Gabriele. Thanks.

Pat I did the face but I'm sure when. I think it was some follow up art after the project was in production or they got it from the cover art design I created. Did I post the concept art for the cover of Crash 1 yet? Losing track of what I've featured so far.

  4. Yep! You most certainly did on February 2nd:

The face looks the same from your cover design but in the game image I posted above shows Crash with his mouth closed, only showing his trademark pearly whites.

  5. I don't remember exactly when I drew it but I think it was one of the last things I did for the project. Thanks for checking it out Pat.

Yeah, that face is also in the pause menù of Crash Bandicoot 2. Charles. did you created the icons for the 1-up, the Crash and Coco one from the pause menù of Crash 3 and the ones in the Biplane levels also from Crash 3? Oh and do you know who designed the icons in CTR?

  7. The only one that I knowingly did was the one that Pat linked to. I don't know who worked on the icons for CTR.
