Crash Bandicoot - Origin of N Gin

For the Crash fans. This is the only drawing of N Gin that I could find in my collection so far. It's a xerox copy of the original. Not dated. I do believe this is the very first concept development sketch of the character. There are more drawings of N Gin online but I don't think they include this one. The character first appeared in Crash 2. He was a scientist / engineer who had an accident and one of his rockets embedded into his head. Thus he lived with it and it became the central trait of his personality. Fun character. I had a good time with this guy. He didn't change much as he was all there design wise from the beginning.

  5. Right you are fellas. I kept thinking I did N Gin after Dingodile and N Tropy for some reason. It's the other way around. That means the drawing has to be from 1997. Thanks for clearing it up!

  6. PS - I changed the date in the image and also edited the text of the blog entry to correctly reflect the info.

If I recall correctly Jason Rubin said that the character was inspired by his headache. Is that correct?

  9. I knew that N.Gin would've been an easy character from the start. The missile on his head also acts as support too.

It's a shame you can't find the others, hopefully they're hidden somewhere good and we can see them sometime in the future Charles!

  10. To Daniel - Thanks for your comment. I do have Skype through my school but use it only for communication and training purposes in situations with online students.

Gabriele - No idea whether or not Jason's headaches were the inspiration for the character. I never knew he had headaches to begin with so this is news to me.

Pat - The other drawings of N Gin that I'm not able to locate are pretty much what's online already with the exception of this particular sketch. I remember that I did a series of drawings with Crash and his jet pack at around the same time. They were in the same folder as the N Gin images. Sooner or later they'll show up.

    Hi Charles!

    Your drawings are amazing...

Somehow, N. Gin reminds me about Phineas Gage... also Phineas's personality changed and he became more angry...

However, I always loved N. Gin's madness... and rocket, of course...

  13. Hi RL and thanks for your comments. N Gin was a fun character to work on. And yes, now that you mention it, there is a correlation with Phineas Gage. Like Gage his personality has been affected by the traumatic alteration to his brain.
