Crash Bandicoot 1 - Running Lizard

Looking through the archives I found another obscure character from the development of the original Crash game when it was Willy the Wombat. I posted the first image last year when I was featuring characters that never made it into the game. At the time I was asked to design a running lizard so this is what I came up with. The running lizard Naughty Dog wanted was one with a hood that would expand and give a menacing appearance as one would expect to see in nature. The revised design is dated March 1995 as is the lizard in the track suit. The reason why the second lizard is simple and angular is due to the requirements of the original PlayStation console. There were a limited number of polygons that each character was comprised of so I adapted and kept that in mind when I worked the revised concept.

I think this is the one lizard that keeps jumping around in two of the levels, that is also the same enemy that appears as a cyborg in Crash 2. I love how Crash 2 show what happened to the island and it's inhabitants one year after the events of the first game. Thanks for sharing this one too Charles, I guess we will see the monkey or the crocodile next. I'm also very curious for the antropomorphic form of the Shark!

  2. There's quite a few incidental animal characters I sketched for Crash 1. Once I realized that ND wasn't looking for an elaborate design I didn't spend much time building them out. Whatever I can dig up I'll post.

  3. Hey there Charles! Love the second design of the Lizard. Very stylized and angular which perfectly fits into Crash's universe!

Say Charles, can we see the emotion sketches of Crash and company soon? I know that Naughty Dog posted a few on their website long ago but I did find a few new ines in old magazines (I posted a few a while ago) and I know that there's more that hasn't been uncovered.
