Yippee! Finally got a chance to draw a character! I've been caught up in many distractions and issues and what have you. I'm happy to say that at least for now I'm able to do something creative. Last couple of evenings at my school my students gave me an assignment. I was directed to design my version of the Big Bad Wolf from the Three Little Pigs story. These sketches are my first pass on the character. Normally in a professional situation I'd come up with lots of different variations. In class I used the opportunity to provide a demonstration for my fantastic students. Blue pencil and ball point pen. Hope everyone is doing well and as always thanks for checking in.
Hey there Charles, I love your wolf design. Ive did something like this, Did a comparison of your Cortex and Joe Pearson design for Cortex well using the pencil brush on Photoshop. https://hazartsnrafts.deviantart.com/art/Cortex-N-Cortex-700808462
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Joe Pearson when designing the characters for the fist game did he make multi designs for the characters or in one fell swoop? Would love too see the designs.
He's unnaturally cute! The interesting thing about this is the clothes he wears! Usually, any portrayal of the BBW would wear overalls or clean clothing! So its interesting to see him wear tattered clothing!
ReplyDeleteTattered clothing would be pretty obvious for a character like him. I think the Disney version did make the wolf's pants a little dingy such as a patch over the seat where his tail is and the bottom of the pant legs had some rips as well. Most depictions of Big Bad tend to make him somewhat a drifter or vagabond like.
ReplyDeleteCharles' take makes the wolf look like he's been wearing the same outfit for quite a long while as it now appears very tight on him (like an adult growing out of its child size).
Oh wow, I'm in love with this guy! It's an interesting take on the character and the animal even, usually wolves are designed with long noses like Goofy or Wile E. Coyote, but this is very different and I like that. Amazing design as always!
ReplyDeleteIf I can take a moment of your time, I would like to get some advice. Here: (https://gabriele-t92.deviantart.com/art/Spike-Echidna-Crash-Bandicoot-OC-1-704918095) I tried to design an original character for the Crash Bandicoot series, he could be a boss or something else. I was inspired by some enemies that appear in later Crash games (This guys: https://www.crashmania.net/images/encyclopedia/bestiary/spike/spike-crash-of-the-titans-mind-over-mutant-ds.jpg) I would really like to know what do you think, is he in style with the rest of the cast? What could I do to make him stand out more or give him that typical Crash flavour?
Hey there Hazman. Great job on your Pearson / Zembillas comparison of Cortex. I'm not sure how Joe worked when developing the first game. I would see his concepts when we met with ND at Universal. He usually had several designs that had a degree of variation between them but were mostly consistent with a central idea for the look of the character. They were quick sketch concepts done in thick point black line marker. For the most part I followed his lead and would refine the look of the characters more. Making them conducive to animation and maybe give them an extra push here and there. Like the hair on Cortex.
ReplyDeleteThank you Crash Latte. I'm currently working on another version of the Big Bad Wolf and trying something different.
Thanks Christopher Sobieniak. The version of the character I'm working on now is different.
Thank you too Gabriele. Your character is excellent! If I were directing you I'd recommend working the legs a little more. The upper body is a very strong design. The legs could match it with some anatomical complexity. Similar to the way you handled the arms. In any case very impressive!
Thank you mr Zembillas, it means so much to me! I'll try to follow your advice and apply it to my next designs.
ReplyDeleteAlso I'm looking forward to see the other design.
