Big Bad Bunny - Head Rotation

A couple nights ago in class while working with beginning students in character design I was lecturing about the importance of being able to create a professional rotation. Being able to turn a character is an essential skill in the scheme of things when it comes to production. So I came up with a fun character concept and did this demonstration turning the head.

  2. I could try this with a character that I'm creating inspired in my pet, he has a face which is difficult to draw for me and this could help me to practice

  3. Turnarounds are always hard, because usually a character looks significantly different from the front and the side.

  4. Hey there X and Araceli and Geb. Character rotations / turns are very important in a production situation. If you're a professional character designer it's something that's expected of you. If you're working as a character designer in a studio you'll be required to do these. Not just on your own designs but many times on someone else's concepts. It's part of the job. Get good at doing turns and you'll increase your value as a character designer. Plus it's excellent artistic practice.

  7. That's a good head rotation X. Follow through to the back views and you'll see that the image grows a little vertically and also widens slightly. Try keeping these aspects in check by using vertical guidelines to keep your character on model and also use your pencil to measure and gauge width. Best way to do a rotation is with a back light on each individual drawing as if you were animating it which you are. A rotation is an animated spin of sorts. All things considered this is a very good effort.

  9. Hi X. You did well. The more you practice the better you'll get. Good luck!
