Crash Bandicoot 1 - Possum and Koala

Hello there everybody! Sorry for the delay in posting new content. Things have been really busy lately and sometimes it gets to the point where I have to deal with what's in front of me at any given moment. Let's get back on track with the latest in never before seen art from the development of the original Crash Bandicoot game in the days when it was Willy the Wombat.

Here's a couple more incidental characters I came up with in March 1995. One is an opossum and  the other a koala bear. My first attempt gave them some fairly nondescript eyes and upon Naughty Dog's feedback I revised the designs accordingly.

Lovely cute designs Charles!

I like how you gave both the Opossum and Koala angry expressions to display emotions. Were other enemies given this facelift too?

Also, did you design the props for the environment too or did Joe Pearson took the helm of doing that?

I think this was the last time I had to change details on facial features such as the eyes on incidental characters. Everything else from here on out was pretty straight forward as I knew what Naughty Dog was looking for.

The props were probably Joe Pearson. He was the only one designing anything along those lines at the time. And if they were part of the environment designs it was almost certainly him.

What cute little character you have there. Great addiction to the Crash Bandicoot collection Charles.

Thanks Gabriele. I wouldn't have given a second thought about these drawings if not for the ongoing love of Crash. Interesting to see how things change over time.

I like the mad Characters they look like they don't take crap from anyone.

Were these ever planned as anthros? Was there an in-between phase where the enemies would look like monsters?

Hi Austin.

Not that I'm aware of. In the case of these two characters there wasn't a phase where they were being considered as anthropomorphic in the sense of the other lead characters. They weren't considered as monsters either as far as I know.
